Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus is a common fungal infection of the nail and nail bed. It usually starts at the end of the nail that you trim, then spreads toward the nail bed. The infected nail becomes discolored, thickened and difficult to cut. Toenail fungus can affect a single toenail or several nails on one foot or both feet. It is unsightly and embarrassing. If allowed to spread, it can cause foot pain, odor, and sores on your feet. The fungus also sheds and can infect other members of your household especially if you share a bed or shower.

Toenail fungus is a chronic condition that can lead to serious health problems for patients with diabetes or immune disorders.

A portion of fungal infections are a result of nail disorders. If you have a sick or deformed toenail, you have a greater risk of acquiring a fungal infection. But mostly, the combination of fungi and a moist environment can lead to overgrowth of fungus. Individuals with a weakened  immune system, such as diabetic patients, patients undergoing chemotherapy, and elderly people, are more susceptible to toenail fungus.

Candida and Dermatophytes are the most common contaminants that cause nail infections. The fungus thrives in moist and dark environments. Since your feet are enclosed in shoes and not open to the environment, the infection is more likely to affect toenails than fingernails.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Toenail fungus infections are common, but they can be very difficult to treat. Because the infection is under the nail, topical medications are less effective to treat the fungus. The most common treatment for toenail fungus is medication you take by mouth which requires monitoring of your liver function. Another effective treatment is laser nail therapy. The laser targets the fungus under the nail, without damaging the nail or surrounding tissue. This therapy is quick, safe, and painless for curing nail fungus infections. The success rate for curing toenail fungus is 85% with laser foot therapy to achieve clear nails.

If you have a foot injury or a condition that’s getting worse, don’t live with the pain.
